You've been told what stress is. You may have read about cortisol. But almost nobody has explained how your body actually switches that state of alert off. The answer is: thanks to the vagus nerve.
Your Body Has an Accelerator and a Brake
Your autonomic nervous system — the part that runs in the background without your involvement — operates in two modes: one that switches you on, and one that switches you off.
The mode that switches you on is called the sympathetic nervous system. It's your accelerator: it prepares you to act, react, escape. Fast heartbeat, tense muscles, sharp focus.
The mode that switches you off is called the parasympathetic nervous system. It's your brake: it slows the heart, releases muscle tension, and guides the body back to calm.

In this article, we focus on the brake — and specifically on what operates it: the vagus nerve.
What Is the Vagus Nerve (simple explaination)
The vagus nerve is the main nerve responsible for activating the brake — that is, the parasympathetic nervous system.
One thing is worth getting clear, because this is where most people get confused: the vagus nerve is not the brake. The brake is the parasympathetic nervous system. The vagus nerve is the cable that carries the braking signal.
The vast majority of parasympathetic fibres run through it — around 75% by most estimates. Which is why, when people talk about "activating the brake", they're almost always talking about the vagus nerve.
A concrete image. Think of the brakes on a car: the actual brake is the pad on the wheel. But without the cable carrying the command from the pedal, the pad doesn't move. The vagus nerve is that cable.
It's not a muscle. It's not an organ. It's a line of communication.
Where It Travels and What It Connects
The vagus nerve is very long. It starts at the base of the brain, travels down the neck, passes through the chest, and reaches all the way into the abdomen. Along the way it passes through key organs: the throat, the heart, the lungs, and a large part of the digestive system.
It's a two-way communication road. It doesn't just carry commands from the brain to the organs. It also sends information back — from the organs to the brain. That's how the gut "talks" to the head. That knot in your stomach when you're tense? It passes through here too.
This means something concrete: when your body is tense, the brain knows it. And when the brain is on alert, the body feels it. The vagus nerve is the channel through which this dialogue runs continuously.
Why Your Brake Responds Slowly Today
Stress, in itself, is not the enemy. It's a physiological response your body developed to protect you: when faced with a perceived threat, the sympathetic system prepares you to act, react, and get to safety. Once the threat passes, the vagus nerve steps in and brings everything back to calm. The system works — and works well.
The problem starts when stress becomes constant, chronic. And for many people today, that's exactly what happens. There's no real, immediate danger to run from, but the body keeps treating notifications, deadlines, and background tension as if there were. The accelerator stays pressed for weeks, sometimes months.
In those conditions, the brake starts responding more and more slowly. In technical terms, this is called low vagal tone: the vagus nerve's ability to return the body to calm diminishes, and recovering after a moment of tension becomes increasingly difficult. It's a bit like a brake that never really gets used: it doesn't break, but it loses responsiveness. You press and the car slows down — but with a delay.

Signs That Your Brake Is Responding Slowly
These aren't symptoms to diagnose. They're sensations you may already recognise:
- You struggle to "switch off" even when you finally have time
- You feel tense with no clear reason
- Your digestion slows down during stressful periods
- Sleep doesn't restore you the way it should
- You need more time than usual to calm your mind and body after an intense moment
- Even seemingly minor triggers put you on edge

How to Support Vagal Tone
The good news is that vagal tone is not fixed. It can be trained, day by day, with practices that are accessible to anyone — some you'll already know, others probably not.
Slow Breathing
Slowing your breath is one of the most direct ways to activate the vagus nerve. The ideal is around five to six breaths per minute, with the exhale always longer than the inhale. It's a practice you can do at home, at the office, on the train, on a plane — and its effects build over the medium to long term.
If you need something more immediate, there's a specific technique called the "physiological sigh", made widely known by neuroscientist Andrew Huberman, professor of neurobiology at Stanford University School of Medicine and one of the most authoritative voices today in science communication on the nervous system.
The technique is simple: take a deep breath in through the nose, filling your lungs almost completely, and hold for a moment. Then add a small extra sip of air at the top to fill the lungs fully. From there, begin a slow, controlled exhale through the mouth. That second sip reopens the tiny air sacs in the lungs and lowers cortisol almost immediately. Huberman explains it in this short video.
Cold Exposure
No ice bath required. Thirty seconds of cold water on your face or a cool rinse at the end of your shower is enough. Cold forces the autonomic nervous system to regulate, slows the heart rate, and activates the parasympathetic system quickly and measurably.
A note for those who enjoy ice baths, which have become very popular in recent years. Cold water immersion, when practised gradually and with care, produces real, documented benefits: it reduces muscle inflammation, increases the release of dopamine and norepinephrine (with positive effects on mood, focus, and recovery), and over time helps the nervous system become more resilient to stress.
That said, an ice bath is in itself an acute stress on the body. It works precisely because it challenges the nervous system — which is why it should be used when you're in a condition that allows it, not during periods of intense chronic stress, deep fatigue, or poor recovery, when the body already has enough to manage. Before starting, especially if you have cardiovascular conditions, high blood pressure, or other health concerns, always consult your doctor.
Voice and Vibration
The vagus nerve passes through the throat: the vibrations produced by your voice stimulate it directly. Singing, humming quietly, or simply making a prolonged low "hmmm" sound while you're still are all ways to activate it. Laughing
It sounds obvious, but it isn't. The facial muscles involved in a genuine smile stimulate the vagus nerve and send the brain a signal of safety. Even a forced smile, held for a few minutes, produces measurable effects on vagal tone.
Touch and Massage
A gentle massage at the base of the neck, behind the ears, or along the jawline can directly influence the vagus nerve, which in that area runs very close to the surface. A light abdominal massage also acts on vagal nerve endings in the gut.
Rhythmic, Conscious Movement
Walking at a steady pace, practising yoga, or any form of slow and repetitive movement improves heart rate variability over time — one of the main indicators of vagal tone. Intensity isn't the point. Regularity is.

The Key Point
By now, one thing should be clear: the vagus nerve is not the brake. It's the cable that operates it. And like all cables, it works better when it's used, exercised, kept in shape.
For many people today, that cable is underused — not because it's broken, but because the accelerator never stays off long enough to let it do its job. The good news is that this can change. Not drastically, not all at once. With small, consistent daily habits repeated over time, vagal tone improves — and with it, the body's ability to find calm when it needs to.
