You wake up tense before you've even looked at your phone. You struggle to fall asleep even when you're exhausted. You get hit by sudden cravings — especially for sugar and carbs. You're irritable over things that wouldn't normally bother you. You have the persistent sense that you never fully decompress.

None of these signals alone is a diagnosis. Together, they point to a nervous system that can't find its way back to rest.

How to Lower Cortisol Naturally

Cortisol responds to concrete physical signals. "Thinking positive" or telling yourself to relax doesn't reach the system that produces it.

These practices support a return to balance and help lower cortisol over time:

Slow, deep breathing activates the vagus nerve, signalling to the body that the threat has passed. Moderate physical movement — a walk, stretching — helps metabolise accumulated cortisol. Regular sleep is the most important variable: cortisol follows a precise circadian rhythm, and a consistent wake time is one of the strongest signals you can give your system. Reducing evening stimulation — bright lights, screens, news — lowers your baseline alert level.
